Alternative Methods To Treat Hair Loss

Prescription medicines and hair transplantation may be the more commonly known treaments for hair loss and baldness. But alongside these options, alternative systems of medicine such as herbal drugs, ayurvedic medicines (the popular nature-based Indian system of alternative medicine), homeopathic and Chinese herbal treatments are found to be successful against hair loss by some.

The causes for their efficacy against baldness may not fully be clear yet. However they are becoming increasingly popular as they have comparatively few or no side effects.

Some such cures are:

  • A mixture of coconut, mustard and castor oil in equal quantities applied before sleeping once or twice a week is suggested to be quite effective in prevention of hair fall and growth of new hair.
  • A mixture of ground black pepper and lemon seeds and some little water if applied on the bald portion of the head is believed by some to be effective to a certain extent.
  • A mixture of rounded licorice in milk when applied on bald patches may spur hair growth.
  • A block of 5-Alpha-Reductase action by the herb Saw Palmetto (Serenoa repens) make this palm-like plant of the North American origin reduce DHT uptake by hair follicles. That's why the mixture of liposterolic extract of saw palmetto with beta-sitosterol (a phytosterol common to many plants and grains) may be quite successful in reducing hair loss and inducing re-growth. Saw Palmetto extracts are used by some doctors in Europe to treat benign prostate hyperplasia.
  • The higher catechin concentration in green tea than in black tea results in hampering the conversion of testosterone to DHT according to some research studies. This may again spur hair re-growth and hair loss retardation.
  • Grape seed extracts have also been found to spur epithelial cell growth and check the growth-inhibiting effect of the molecule TGF-beta2 because of a compound termed OPCs (oligomeric proanthocyanidins) present in them.
  • The procyanidin therapy has been found to be effective in treating male pattern baldness. The skin of green apples being the richest known source of procyanidin therefore is quite effective in reversing the balding process according to some research studies.
  • Black cohosh with its ability to regulate estrogen hormone levels is quite effective in reversing the balding process. Black cohosh is a regular ingredient of natural hair loss restoration formulas. It is, however, something to be used by women but not men.
  • Ayurvedic anti-stress tea with its ingredients of Nardostachys Jatamamsi and Bacopa Monnieri may prevent hair loss. Beside that, its stress relieving action also helps hair re-growth process.
  • Some herbs such as He Shou Wu (Polygonum multiflorum), a Chinese herb and alfalfa strengthen the root of hair; ash guard combats dandruff; rosemary and curry leaves have also been found to be successful in combating hair loss.

This list is just a glimpse of hundreds of home and alternative treatments available for hair loss. Some of them may actually work very effectively. Apart from trying various formulas and medicines there is one very simple and effective Yogic exercise suggested to prevent and reverse the hair loss process.

Just rub your left and right hand nails with each other in regular swift motions while folding both your palms inwards. This stimulates some acupressure spots which results in increased blood flow to the scalp which in turn strengthens the hair roots and improves nutrition to the hair.

Just do it for about 5-7 minutes twice a day and be regular with this exercise. In six months you will see positive results according to supporters of Yogic exercise approaches. It is a apparently very simple and effective method to cure hair loss and improve hair re-growth.
